CDRW dispensing mechanism
What about a CDRW dispensing mechanism built-in to the toaster? You slip in your cash, and get a set of 3 CDRW disks...
Checking popularity of distros
log_file="/home/kiosk/toasting.log" awk '{ print $5; }' < "${log_file}" | sort | uniq -c | sort -g
Open Content
How about dispensing (all? part?) of the Project Gutenberg content via the Toasters? Many of the books available through PG are of importance in education, and this would be a way to make them cheaply accessible.
Custom ISO & Non-distros
Some lecturers suggested to make transition software (Windows based GPLed) available (GIMP replaces Photoshop, OpenOffice replaces Word, Firefox as browser etc) with instructions users can follow for the steady migration process. This could be interesting as the user would be able to replace software on a per package basis and then decide, when comfortable, to eventually try a full migration.
Custom ISOs should be interesting as packages like LAMPIX would enable students to run a full linux web/db server from a knoppix type environment.
Complete Change of Approach
Currently the site is techie-focussed. It talks about Distros and burning and the primary entry point is a list of distros. This has meaning only for linux converts coming to the toaster to get a distro they have probably already decided on via other channels (witness the number of queries we get re "is xyz ver 123 on the toaster yet?").
How about rewriting the content around
- If you want to do music, click here...,
- If you want a home office system click here,
- Games,
- tuXlab,
- home PC for small kids,
- Beginner already familiar with Windows,
- Somewhat experienced looking for ...,
- Tired of virusses,
- Server system for small workgroup,
- ... etc.
We could even build a set of checkboxes that filters the list of distros depending on the users'selection.
Where does one see the response to these suggestions?
I really support the previous input, but was wondering, as a new user, if there was any other support for it. Is there another place for responses or does it just show up here?
Mobile Toasters
Seems like it would be great PR to create a mobile toaster and be able to take it to trade shows, conventions, etc. Feasibility? Ideas? I'm new to the project. -drocra
A FreedomToaster could be taken on the road although it might be a touch too bulky as a large-scale kiosk. The Mini_FT shows promise though as a mobile platform. -comter
